Inside Carmelo Candiano's studio: a photographic exploration of artistic spaces.

On the occasion of the Costaiblea film festival, in the last days of 2022 in Scicli, I had the privilege of meeting Maestro Carmelo Candiano; kind and reassuring person as well as one of the most incredible artists of our time, who generously allowed me to visit and photograph his studio. 

It's a December morning, Carmelo Candiano comes to pick me up in the center of Scicli, and takes me to a nearby countryside area, in a large farmhouse used as a studio. I am immediately struck by the expanse of greenery that separates the gate from the house and the presence of beautiful white doves. 

I enter this magical space, full of light and color, and the Maestro leaves me alone to allow me to freely explore and photograph his works up close. When I was shooting, I thought and was inspired by the photographs of the interiors taken by Luigi Ghirri, but I immediately decided to adopt a different focus: I took photos of the work materials and the finished and incomplete works of art, thinking intensely about the creative process of the Artist. 

I imagined moving the objects and giving them a creative relocation, then used overlays in post-production to give new dimension to the photographs and evoke the emotional responses and sensations I experienced inside the studio. That roundup of abstract images and shades of color gave me a new visual impact and allowed me to recompose different shapes to give life to a single image. 

The associations that I have composed are not casual but dictated by the understanding of creative spaces, by the atmosphere and by the desire to suggest greater emotion, evoking the sensations and emotions experienced within that space. 

The intention was to tell not only the real image of the artistic environment but rather to underline the discourse inherent to the concept of studio-laboratory in which art and life mix and overlap. I wonder if there really is a line that separates the Man from the Artist or if rather the two parts intersect to the point of embellishing each other.

Dentro lo studio di Carmelo Candiano: un'esplorazione fotografica di spazi artistici.

In occasione del festival cinematografico Costaiblea, negli ultimi giorni del  2022 a Scicli, ho avuto il privilegio di conoscere il Maestro Carmelo Candiano; persona gentile e rassicurante oltre ad essere tra gli artisti più intensi del nostro tempo, che mi ha generosamente permesso di visitare e fotografare il suo studio.

Non appena entrata  in questo spazio magico, pieno di luce e colore,  il Maestro mi lascia da sola per permettermi di esplorare in libertà e fotografare da vicino le sue opere. Nel momento in cui scattavo,  pensavo e mi ispiravo alle fotografie degli interni, riprese da Luigi Ghirri,  ma ho subito deciso di adottare un focus diverso: ho scattato foto dei materiali da lavoro, di oggetti di ogni sorta e delle opere d'arte sia finite che  incomplete, ragionando intensamente sul processo creativo dell'Artista.

Le associazioni che ho composto non sono casuali ma dettate dalla comprensione degli spazi creativi, dall'atmosfera e dal voler suggerire maggiore risonanza emotiva, evocando le sensazioni vissute all'interno di quello spazio.

L'intenzione era quella di raccontare non solo l'immagine reale dell'ambiente artistico ma piuttosto di sottolineare il discorso inerente al concetto di studio-laboratorio in cui arte e vita si mescolano e si sovrappongono. Mi chiedo se esista davvero una linea che separa l'Uomo dall' Artista o se piuttosto le due parti si intersechino fino ad impreziosirsi l'un l'altra.
